From the Desk of Our Foster Youth Resource Concierge
One of my amazing youth has decided that joining the Air Force is her next goal after aging out and graduating high school. Helping her prepare has been eye opening for me. Getting ready for the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) probably feel like a huge step, but with the right preparation, you can set yourself up for success! Whether you're looking into a military career or exploring options, the ASVAB is a great way to identify your strengths. Not sure if the military is for you but looking to learn more? Check out what the armed services can offer you.
Know What’s On the Test
The ASVAB covers areas like general science, arithmetic reasoning, word knowledge, math, and mechanical comprehension. Figure out which sections you'll need to focus on, especially if some areas are tougher for you than others.
Use Study Materials
Your FYRC can help you access official ASVAB study guides and practice tests. These are great tools to get familiar with the test format. Study for an hour or two a few days a week to cover everything in a manageable way. Don’t wait until the last minute to cram!
Practice Tests Are Key
Taking practice tests is one of the best ways to prepare. They help you get used to the timing and the types of questions you’ll see. Afterward, review your answers and spend extra time on sections where you missed the most questions.
Stay Focused on Weak Areas
If math or vocabulary is challenging, focus your efforts there. There are tons of free online resources that break down tough concepts and help you review the basics.
Be Calm and Confident
On test day, make sure to rest well the night before and eat a healthy breakfast. Stay calm. You’ve put in the work, and now it’s time to show what you know! Good luck, and remember—you’ve got this!
