Why is studying important?

Studying is an important skill for high school, college, and many careers that involve examinations (eg master plumber’s exam, real estate license exam).

Studying is something that a lot of people try to do the night before tests, but then they get frustrated when that doesn’t work.

There are different ways to study and not every method will work for every person. An important thing to do while studying is to find what works for you and for the class/exam that you are preparing for.

Study methods and strategies

Below are some different study methods and strategies. They might not all work for you, but a combination of different methods may work well for you.

General strategies

1. Set dedicated studying time: Instead of just telling yourself to study, pick a specific time each day. It doesn't need to be a whole day; an hour or two should work. If you plan it well, just setting aside 30 minutes per day in the weeks leading up to an exam can work.
2. Choose a study location: Avoid studying on your bed, since it is also where you sleep. Instead, use a desk, or if you can, a library. Finding a specific place or environment that you prefer for studying can help improve your concentration.
3. Study with friends: While studying with friends can be helpful, it requires intentional focus. By agreeing to study together, you can hold each other accountable and help one another.
4. Take breaks: Having breaks during study sessions is necessary. This allows you to recharge and prevent burnout. Remember, studying well involves finding a balance between focused work and breaks.
5. Celebrate milestones: While studying is important, it's equally important to acknowledge and celebrate your achievements along the way. Celebrating victories reminds you of the progress you have already made, motivating you to continue striving for success. Keep in mind that celebrating doesn't mean giving up on future progress – it just highlights the milestones you've conquered.
