Staying Safe During the Upcoming Storm: Tips from the Foster Youth Resource Concierge

With the storm approaching, it’s super important to make sure you’re prepared and know what to do to stay safe. Whether you’re staying with a foster family, in a group home, or at a shelter, these tips will help you handle the storm and any other natural disaster that might come your way.

Stay Informed

The first thing you should do is make sure you’re staying updated on the storm. Watch the news, listen to the radio, or follow trusted sources on social media. If you have a phone, check for emergency alerts and weather updates regularly.

Prepare a Go-Bag

You never know if you’ll need to leave quickly, so it’s always a good idea to have a go-bag packed. Here’s what you should include:

  • Important documents (ID, insurance info)

  • A phone charger and power bank

  • Non-perishable snacks and bottled water

  • Basic first aid supplies

  • Extra clothes

  • Flashlight and extra batteries

Know Your Evacuation Plan

If authorities announce an evacuation, don’t wait. Know where you’re supposed to go and how to get there. Make sure your phone is charged and you have the address or directions. Talk to your case manager or foster family if you're not sure what the plan is.

Stay Indoors During the Storm

Once the storm hits, stay inside and away from windows. Even if it looks calm outside, storms can change quickly, so don’t go out until you know it’s safe. It’s also a good idea to stay in a room without windows if possible.

Check on Your Friends

If you have friends or other foster youth you know, make sure they’re okay too. Send a text, give them a quick call, or reach out through social media. We’re all in this together, and looking out for each other is what makes us stronger.

Remember, storms and natural disasters can be scary, but being prepared makes all the difference. If you need help or have questions, reach out to your foster parent, case manager, or someone you trust.
