Navigating FAFSA: A Guide for Foster Care Students
FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, offers special rules for foster care students to help them secure college funding. As an independent student, you don't need to report your parent's income, only your own if applicable. You can skip sections about family size if the state supports you through foster care, but must include the income of any relatives you live with. Social Security and unemployment benefits will be considered in your financial aid calculation. If adopted from foster care at age 13 or older, you still count as an independent student. Keeping your grades up is essential to maintaining FAFSA benefits and achieving your college dreams.
Things to Know About Writing a Good College Essay or a Personal Statement

Highlight your unique story, achievements, volunteer work, job experience, and hobbies. Start early to allow time for brainstorming, drafting, and revising.
