Renewing Your Driver's License: What You Need to Know
Replacing your driver's license or ID card before it expires is important if it's lost, stolen, or needs an update. Most states allow you to renew a license online, but you may need to renew your driver's license in person at a DMV office if your previous license has expired, important details have changed, or you're applying for a REAL ID. Check with your state's DMV because regulations vary by state. Here's what you need to know to get it done:
Primary Identification: You'll need one of the following original documents with your complete name:
U.S. birth certificate (issued by a county health department or CDC)
Valid U.S. passport or passport card
Consular Report of Birth Abroad
Certificate of Naturalization (form N-550 or N-570)
Certificate of Citizenship (form N-560 or N-561)
Proof of Social Security: Bring an original document with your complete name and Social Security Number (SSN):
Social Security card
W-2 form
Paycheck/stub
SSA-1099
Any 1099
Proof of Residential Address: You'll need two different documents with your residential address. These could be:
Deed, mortgage, or residential rental/lease agreement
Voter registration card
Utility bill (dated within 60 days)
Automobile payment booklet
Selective service card
Medical or health card with address
Current homeowner or automobile insurance policy
Educational institution transcript
Unexpired professional license
Form DS2019 (Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor)
Letter from a homeless shelter or transitional service provider, accompanied by a Certification of Address form
Mail from financial institutions or government agencies
For subsequent renewals, you may not need to present these documents unless your information changes. However, for Commercial Learner's Permits (CLP) or Commercial Driver Licenses (CDL), you'll need to provide proof of residence.
Name Changes:
If you've legally changed your name, bring the original or certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order. Allow 24 to 48 hours after updating your name with the Social Security Administration before applying for a driver's license.
Remember to bring all necessary documents and allow time for processing. With the right paperwork, renewing your driver's license can be a smooth process.
