What to Expect on Your First College Tour

From the desk of our Foster Youth Resource Concierge

Your first college tour—exciting, right? It’s your first real chance to get a feel for the campus, the vibe, and figure out if this could be your home for the next few years. It’s normal to be a little nervous or unsure of what to expect. Don't worry. I’ve got some tips to help you make the most out of the experience!

Ask Lots of Questions

This is your time to find out everything you want to know about the school. What’s the campus culture like? What are the dorms like? How’s the food? What about campus safety? Don't hesitate to ask questions. Your tour guide is usually a current student, and they’ll give you honest answers. The more you ask, the more you'll know whether the school is the right fit for you.

Take Notes and Photos!

College tours can be overwhelming. It's easy to forget details, especially if you're visiting more than one campus. Bring a notebook to write down thoughts and snap photos on your phone. Trust me, you’ll be glad you have those details to look back on later when you're making your final decision.

Get a Feel for the Campus

Pay attention to how the campus feels. Do you like the size of the campus? Can you see yourself walking around those buildings every day? If possible, check out the dorms, dining hall, and common areas. These will be places where you'll spend a lot of time. It's important to feel comfortable.

Talk to Students

If you can, talk to students who aren’t on the tour. Your guide will give you great insights, but chatting with other students can provide another perspective. Ask them about their favorite parts of the school, what they wish they knew before attending, or what they'd improve.

Explore Beyond the Tour

Most tours only show you the key areas of the school. After the official tour, take a walk around the campus on your own. Visit spots like the student center, library, or athletic facilities. If time allows, explore the surrounding neighborhood, too. This can give you a good sense of the community you’ll be living in.

Trust Your Gut

At the end of the day, trust your instincts. If a school feels like a good fit, that's important! College is about more than academics; it's about finding a place where you'll be happy, grow, and thrive.
